Djam Vivie
Djam Vivie (Peki-Avetile, Ghana) currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin. He learned wood working skills as a boy. His grandfathers on his mother’s and father’s side were both craftsmen who built traditional furniture and drums for the village. He learned from watching them and then developed his own style. Besides carving sculptures, Djam also makes and carves furniture and djembes.

“Prosperity Bird”
Cherry
Artist’s Statement:This bird is known as “Calawo” in the native language of the Senufo tribe. I chose to carve this bird because it resembles the cranes that my daughter and I would see at the park. She would run after them and rather than fly off they would walk quickly away. This sculpture now has this memory of my daughter in it.
