Filled with cultural symbols of animals, plants, and people representing the various ethnic groups that have called Madisonís Bayview neighborhood home, Harry Whitehorseís latest creation is a tribute to the tightly knit community.
In the 1930s, a Sicilian immigrant twisted two unusual trees together and planted them in his front yard in what was then the Greenbush neighborhood. In the 1960s, a controversial urban renewal project implemented by the city physically demolished the Greenbush. Amid the devastation, the only thing left standing was the tree, an Osage Orange that had the honor of being Wisconsinís second largest of that species.
In 1971, a new neighborhood called Bayview was built, and the tree continued to thrive. Although some Osage Orange trees in the south live to 400 years, the northern climate and "civilization" took its toll. Beyond its limit in terms of climate, the Osage Orange died in 2000.
In July 2001, Bayview Foundation Executive Director David Haas approached sculptor Harry Whitehorse about creating a sculpture with the Osage Orange.
For the past several years, Whitehorse has been creating beautiful and meaningful sculptures from historic trees. After researching the history of the area and consulting with Bayview residents, Whitehorse submitted sketches detailing his vision for the sculpture. He imagined a sculpture filled with the animals, people and plants symbolic to the ethnic groups that have called the Greenbush and Bayview neighborhood home.
The sculpture was dedicated on August 18, 2002 at the 18th annual Bayview Ethnic Festival in Madison, Wisconsin.
